Metformin role in adjuvant therapy of endometrial cancer

According to the results of in-vitro tests conducted in the UK as it is written in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism at the issue in March 2011, Bee K. Tan, MBBS, PhD, MRCOG, MRCPS (Glasg), University of Warwick, Coventry, and colleagues metformin as an oral antidiabetic potential to play a role as adjuvant therapy in the management of endometrial cancer, in this case explained their reasons for doing research on this topic. "Insulin sensitizers, in particular, the biguanide metformin, is widely used in the management of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Metformin is not only beneficial for improving insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia in PCOS women, but also used long term to boost ovulation and improve cycle regularity menstruation.

In addition to suppress glucose production in the liver, metformin has shown beneficial effects in various tissues, including adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and vascular endothelial. Recently, these drugs also have been shown to inhibit breast cancer cell growth. Because women with insulin resistance will develop endometrial cancer, the researchers decided to use various tests to study the quality of laboratory invasive endometrial cancer cells (ECC-1) in human serum samples from a group of 21 women both before and after they get metformin (850 mg twice daily) for 6 months. The results were compared with control group participants.

The average age of women around 28 years. The Warwick researchers found that in vitro invasion of the real weakened by sera from women with PCOS after 6 months of metformin treatment (P <.01). In addition, cancer cells spread around 25% slower in the serum. Based on their evaluation of sera with various tests, the researchers say, "This effect appears to be associated with NF-B, MMP-2 / 9 and Akt and ERK1 / 2 signaling pathway is known as an important regulator of inflammation, tumor invasion and metastasis.

The author emphasizes the findings require further research with randomized controlled trials. "This is an interesting study because we've been looking for things that metformin can do that can help women with PCO" explains the researcher.
